During World War II, seven girls from different backgrounds are conscripted into the Auxilary Territorial Service.

During their training, the women quickly form a bond and become friends.

On passing out, one group is assigned a 400-mile trip driving military transport; the other learns how to operate anti-aircraft guns.

The director, Leslie Howard, is heard as narrator and recognisably glimpsed in two scenes photographed from behind. (11 pictures)
