Carol Reedโ€™s classic film The Stars Look Down starts an evening of programmes on BBC Four (called At the Coalface) on the decline of Britainโ€™s coal industry.

A drama based on A J Croninโ€™s novel, starring Michael Redgrave and Margaret Lockwood. David Fenwick, a minerโ€™s son from the north of England, goes to university vowing to use his education to fight for minersโ€™ rights. But his resolve is tested when he meets the scheming Jenny Sunley.
