Carol Reed’s classic film The Stars Look Down starts an evening of programmes on BBC Four (called At the Coalface) on the decline of Britain’s coal industry.

A drama based on A J Cronin’s novel, starring Michael Redgrave and Margaret Lockwood. David Fenwick, a miner’s son from the north of England, goes to university vowing to use his education to fight for miners’ rights. But his resolve is tested when he meets the scheming Jenny Sunley.
