Born in Liverpool, Arthur Askey gained fame as ‘Big-Hearted Arthur’ in the 1930s radio series, Band Waggon, the first weekly comedy series, which was the basis of his first feature film. His catchphrases included ‘Hello playmates’ and ‘Before your very eyes’.
