In Sussex in the 1950s, a parade of candidates appears for the job of governess

At an English Manor House in a Sussex seaside village during the spring of 1953, a parade of candidates appears for the job of governess to 16-year-old Laurel, whose wealthy grandmother, Mrs St. Maugham, has decided she needs a firmer hand to guide her into adulthood.

The soil outside the home is lime and chalk. Every attempt at growing living things fails in the weed-choked dirt.
