The carefree Rodney and Sabina Pennant are lodgers of the super-efficient Bannings.
The Bannings’ incumbent Nanny leaves in disgust after having to care additionally for the Pennants’ unruly child.
To prevent a recurrence, the ladies of the two families pretend to be sisters and set about recruiting a new nanny.
